How Do I Wear My Hair for Class?
Have you ever had your hair fall in your face during class? It’s annoying, isn’t it? While your hair can be fun to play around with, it’s vital that you are safe and can keep focus during class without your hair going everywhere.
Check out the amazing hair styles that some of our students wore to class last term!
What should you think about when choosing a hairstyle for dance?
Is it secure? - will it fall out or come loose?
Does it keep hair out of your face?
Are there any accessories that could hurt you or fall out (e.g. claw clips, headbands)
Why is your hair important in dance?
When we dance it’s important that we are safe and not distracted during classes! Hair can be a great way to show off your personality, but some hairstyles can cause issues during your classes. We have provided an outline of some safe (and fun) hairstyles and ideas for dance.
The Dreaded ‘Wispy Bits’
Ever seen someone on stage fiddling with their hair and distracting you from their amazing performance? If your hair gets in your face and annoys you during a certain skill or move, chances are it is going to do it again! Just like practising a dance move so that your body remembers it, repeatedly touching your hair can become a part of your dance! Here are some ways you can get those pesky fringes and flyaways out of the way:
Pin it back
Hair spray or gel
Tie back the front of your hair before the bun or pony
Plaits or braids into a bun or pony
Upgrade your ponytail!
If you prefer your hair in a ponytail, here are some different ways to make it last:
Hair Wrap Hair Tie
Tie your normal ponytail
Separate a section from the bottom of the ponytail
Wrap it around your hair tie
Secure with a bobby pin
Bobble Ponytail
Tie your normal ponytail
Tie a second hair tie a few cm down
Pull at the hair between the two hair ties until the desired “bobble” effect is achieved
Repeat down the length of the ponytail
* Add some school spirit by using green and blue hair ties!
We love a good ponytail, however, for people with very long hair, a ponytail will whip around and hit you and your friends in the face! For these students, we recommend wearing a bun or braids that help to secure your hair. Here are some great bun and braid ideas to help inspire your next dance look:
Buns and Braids
Braided Bun: an easy upgrade to your normal plait
Tie your hair into a ponytail then braid down and secure with a hair tie
Wrap the braid around to form the bun and secure with bobby/bun pins
Add a bun net to help your bun stay neat and secure.
Bun with braid wrap: combine braids and buns for an awesome look!
Tie your hair in a ponytail
Thread your ponytail through your hair donut
Spread your hair to cover the hair donut and secure with a hair tie
Divide the leftover hair into two sections and make two plaits
Wrap the plaits around the front and back of the bun and secure with bobby/bun pins
Space Buns: If one bun isn’t enough, add another (or more!) and create a fun space bun look for dance.
Begin by parting your hair into two equal sections and a straight part.
Tie two equal ponytails
Grab the first ponytail and twirl into a bun (you can use a hair donut for extra volume).
Secure with a hair tie and bobby/bun pins
Repeat on the other side.
We hope this has helped give you some great hair ideas for your next dance class and can’t wait to see your amazing creativity!
