Why Must We Keep Active and Healthy - COVID-19
We all know the importance of being able to keep fit and stay healthy in everyday life. But what many people don’t know are the ways we can lower our risk of obtaining disease.
It is critical we keep our bodies healthy and minds spirited during this time. Here is some advice on what you can do to stay healthy through the outbreak.
Keeping active:
Decreased exercise increases your susceptibility to certain diseases, and makes it harder for the body to expel the disease from its system.
Doctor Nevin Sanlier, nutrition and dietetics expert and dean of the Health Sciences Faculty at Ankara Medipol University, said last week that “it is important to continue physical activities” during this time of pandemic.
Sleep
Rest is vital in this time, as it allows for restoration of the mind and body.
It is recommended that you sleep seven to eight hours each night, and never less than five. Low levels of sleep result in a vulnerable body system that is unprepared to fight disease if encountered.
Food & Drink
Probiotics & probiotic foods: This is an obvious one, and we’ve all been told by health professionals that having a store of probiotics and always consuming foods rich in probiotics will have beneficial properties and will ensure that we can fight disease. Foods with fermented milk (eg kefir, cheese and yogurt) are beneficial for a healthy body.
Try to avoid fatty foods. These are never good for your body and will decrease your ability to fight disease.
Consistent eating habits: Not only should we be paying attention to what we eat, but also when we eat. Many people, in times of crises, alter their eating patterns, and stress-eat, or don’t eat at all. Irregular eating patterns compromise the body’s health and increases vulnerability to disease.
Wash your food: wash your fruit and vegetables before you eat them!
Water intake: We should all be drinking 2.5 liters (roughly 10 cups) of water in a day. This will prevent dehydration, which can rid the body of disease. Not only that, but you’ll also find you have more energy, no headaches and are able to work better!
Hygiene
Hand hygiene: if possible, carry hand sanitiser to any public space you go to. Wash your hands before and after eating, and never put your hands near your mouth.
Take regular showers and stay clean.
Where and when you can, use card instead of cash when purchasing. Just think of how many hundreds of people have touched that $5 bill before you!
